CAN (Controller Area Network),即控制器局域网，是国际上应用最广泛的现场总线之一。它是一种总线仲裁的通讯协议，采用双线通信接线模式，允许多个主节点。其总线通讯距离可以达到10K米。速率最高达1Mbts/s。基于CAN的物理层结构，针对不同的应用层，发展了不同的应用范围的协议。在汽车行业，常用的包括SAE J1939等。
LIN（Local Interconnect Network）是另一种单线通讯网络协议，它有效地支持汽车应用中分布式电子节点的控制。它是一主多从的多点总线，最多可以挂16个节点，通讯距离最远达40m，速率达20kbit/s。CAN和LIN具有不同的技术特点，可使用不同的情况。
