齿轮油主要指变速器和后桥的润滑油。主要起润滑齿轮和轴承、防止磨损和锈蚀、帮助齿轮散热等作用。
汽车齿轮油用于汽车转向器、变速器以及驱动桥等齿轮传动机构中，由于齿轮传动时表面压力高，所以齿轮油对齿轮的润滑、抗磨、冷却、散热、防腐防锈、洗涤和降低齿面冲击与噪声等方面起着重要作用。
性能：
1、合适的粘度及良好的粘温性
粘度是齿轮油最基本的性能。粘度大，形成的润滑油膜较厚，抗负载能力相对较大。
2、足够的极压抗磨性
极压抗磨性是齿轮油最重要的性质、最主要的特点。
是赖以防止运动中齿面磨损、擦伤、胶合的性能。
抗磨、耐负荷性能 由于齿轮负荷一般都在490MPa以上，而双曲线齿面负荷更高达2942MPa,为防止油膜破裂造成齿面磨损和擦伤，在齿轮油中一般都加入极压抗磨剂，以前常用硫-氯型、硫-磷-氯型、硫-氯-磷-锌型、硫-铅型和硫-磷-铅型添加剂。普遍采用硫-磷或硫-磷-氮型添加剂。
3、良好的抗乳化性
齿轮油遇水发生乳化变质会严重影响润滑油膜形成而引起擦伤、磨损。
4、良好的氧化安定性和热安定性
良好的热氧化安定性保证油品的使用寿命。
5、良好的抗泡性
生成的泡沫不能很快消失将影响齿轮啮合处油膜形成，夹带泡沫使实际工作油量减少，影响散热。
6、良好的防锈防腐蚀性
腐蚀和锈蚀不仅破坏齿轮的几何学特点和润滑状态，腐蚀与锈蚀产物会进一步引起齿轮油变质，产生恶性循环。
