固体原料煤从煤气发生炉顶部加入，随煤气炉的运行向下移动，在与从炉底进入的气化剂（空气、蒸汽）逆流相遇的同时，受炉底燃料层高温气体加热，发生物理、化学反应，产生粗煤气（即热煤气），温度约450-550℃，经除尘后直接供燃烧设备使用。仅经粗除尘而未清洗净化的混合发生炉煤气称为热发生炉煤气。
