超导线在临界温度T、临界磁场强度H及临界电流密度J值以内时具有超导性，其电阻为零。这将使超导电机绕组的电阻损耗降为零，既解决了电枢绕组发热、温升问题，又使电机效率大为提高。更重要的是超导线的临界磁场强度和临界电流密度都很高，使超导电机的气隙磁通密度和绕组的电流密度可比传统常规电机提高数倍乃至数十倍。这就大大提高电机的功率密度，降低电机的重量、体积和材料消耗。1986年以来，高临界温度（液氮温区）超导材料的发现，为超导电机的实用化展现了新的前景。超导电机主要制成汽轮发电机和单极直流电机。
